As Michael Mahoney, senior VP of consumer marketing at GoHealth notes, “If you don’t qualify for an exemption, you are required by law to enroll in a health insurance plan or pay the tax penalty. The law does not offer additional leniency. The cost of the tax penalty is consistent across the country: 1 percent of your household income or $95 per adult ($47.50 per child). This fee increases to 2 percent next year and 2.5 percent the following years, so the need to select the right plan or be penalized isn’t going away — it’s becoming greater each year.”
