As manager of learning and development at GoHealth, Javier Sotelo empowers his colleagues to grow their skills and achieve their career goals. He has also chosen to elevate the voices of Latinos and Hispanics within the organization as the head of our employee resource group, GoLUNA (Latinos United for Networking & Advancement).
GoLUNA’s mission is to advocate for and build community among employees at GoHealth who have Latin American or Hispanic heritage. The group fosters a sense of belonging through cultural awareness activities as well as providing educational opportunities and allyship.
“I was inspired to take on a leadership role in GoLUNA because I wanted to help create a space where our Latino community feels seen, celebrated, and supported,” Javier said. “Representation matters, and I believe that sharing our stories and culture not only strengthens our community but also enriches GoHealth as a whole.”
Celebrating Hispanic Heritage
GoLUNA seeks meaningful ways to honor the heritage of Latino and Hispanic employees and to educate the GoHealth community. To that end, Javier invites his colleagues to learn about the diverse cultures and histories of people with origins in Latin America or Spanish-speaking countries.
All are welcome to attend events hosted by this or any ERG, such as sessions with guest speakers, and to join the GoLUNA member chat. Outside of the workplace, Javier encourages GoHealth team members to seek out compelling expressions of Latin American culture in media and books.
One of the best opportunities to reflect on the enduring power of Hispanic and Latin American culture occurs every year from September 15 to October 15, featuring events such as live music, festivals, and museum exhibits. The 2025 theme for National Hispanic Heritage Month is “Collective Heritage: Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future,” highlighting how Latinos have made an impact on the U.S. and the entire world in areas such as the arts, science, food, and military service.
“For me, Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to celebrate our culture and the traditions that shaped who I am today,” Javier said. “It’s also a moment to honor the sacrifices of my parents and siblings, who worked hard to give future generations more opportunities. This month is about embracing that legacy with pride, carrying it forward, and sharing it with others so our stories and heritage continue to thrive.”
Embodying Values
Working in the health insurance market often means adapting to change and helping consumers through difficult situations. That’s why resilience, the ability to weather challenges with agility and a spirit of continuous innovation, is a core value at GoHealth. To Javier, resilience also describes the strength that he draws from his family and their story.
“Growing up, I saw my family work tirelessly to create opportunities for us,” he said. “That determination fuels how I approach challenges at work and inspires me to lead with ‘ganas,’ persistence, optimism, and inner drive.”
Javier has brought that resilience to his work at GoHealth. Through his leadership in GoLUNA, he hopes to pass along some of the values that have propelled him forward in his career, inspiring other employees to speak up for themselves and express pride in their cultures.
“My advice is to be yourself, embrace your voice, and trust that your perspective adds value,” Javier said. “At the same time, keep learning and stretching yourself by taking on new opportunities, even when they feel outside your comfort zone. Growth comes from speaking up, staying curious, and being open to continuous development.”
