About the role:  The Assistant Controller will support Accounting, External Reporting, Technical Accounting, Accounts Payable and Payroll functions.  This role is critical to the ensuring the Company reports is financials results accurately and timely.  A successful Assistant Controller will be someone who enjoys process improvements and can build a world class accounting department.  This position will report to the Controller. 

What you’ll do:

  • Ensure timely and accurate accounting and financial reporting for the consolidated and separate financial statements.
  • Ensure timely and accurate processing and recording of financial transactions in accordance with GAAP for all activities.
  • Develop & monitor policies and procedures to ensure effective processed and controls exist & are followed.
  • Manage General Accounting team. Provide oversight and direction to ensure processes are efficient & followed.  Assign resources appropriately.  Ensure goals are aligned with the department.  Responsible for accuracy, timeliness and completeness of staff work product. Supervise, coach & mentor direct reports.
  • Participate in, and lead all or part, of process improvement projects including cross-divisional projects as assigned.  Provide insight & expertise on processes and accounting ramifications.
  • Manage month-end close cycle including timely journal entries, accurate accruals, budget variance review and balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Evaluate sources and timing of information received, improve timing where dependencies exist, and reduce work-load bottlenecks. Review and approve manual journal entries and account/bank reconciliations.
  • Prepare and/or oversee preparation of audit and regulatory schedules.

What we’re looking for:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field from an accredited college of university is required
  • CPA certification is highly preferred
  • Minimum 7+ years in the controller group within a public company; healthcare experience a plus
  • Strong Management experience is required
  • Accounting software experience
  • Project management experience is highly desirable
  • Ability to plan and prioritize workload and meet deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) necessary to effectively interact with all levels of organization

Location: Chicago, IL (3 days in office)
